It’s the Summer of 2021. Do I Really Need a Face Mask?

A picture taken on a beach, sunglasses rest on a stack of three novels on a table, and behind the table there are large, palm shade umbrellas with beach chairs underneath.

We, as much as anyone, know what summer represents. It’s a calling from the outdoors to enjoy fresh air, barbecues, friends, and physical activity. Tracing back to our school days, Americans look forward to our summer vacation, and as we grow up, summer never completely loses its allure in our imagination as a time meant for play.

Couple that with the restraints Americans have endured for more than a year now, and this summer, for many of us, represents a chance to put the pandemic behind us.

—So, this summer, do I really still need a face mask?

—Yes and no.

Let’s start with what is an undeniable fact: face masks help contain the spread of COVID-19. The exact percentage of efficiency, the difference between how masks prevent disease on a personal level versus a macro societal level, and whether those ill-fitting face masks get the job done continues to be studied. However, the general trend has been called “compelling” and “hard to refute” by leading CDC scientists and researchers around the globe. Wearing a face mask helps prevent the spread of disease, with no evidence to contradict this finding.

As vaccination rates increase, the CDC has updated its guidelines for face masks. The final verdict: masking can only be relaxed in certain contexts. For vaccinated people, masks are no longer required for small, indoor gatherings, even if they’re meeting with unvaccinated people. There are two exceptions to this rule:

  • Vaccinated individuals meeting with unvaccinated people from more than one different household.
  • Meetings with unvaccinated people who have increased risk or who live with someone with increased risk for severe illness. People with increased risk include people with conditions such as asthma, kidney disease, and the elderly.

Every other place where face masks were previously worn still require face masks. The CDC continues to recommend masks in grocery stores, shopping centers, and any other place where medium or large crowds form. Popular forms of transportation like planes, buses, and trains will also continue to require the use of COVID-19 masks.

A time-lapse photo of a crowded indoor shopping mall where the people in motion are blurs and there are elevators, stairs, and shops, all shown as an example of where people should still wear COVID-19 masks.

By all accounts then, this summer will be a huge step towards normality. However, relaxing safety measures prematurely can lead to renewed waves of the virus and a further prolongation of the crisis.

The main reason masks continue to be an essential part of personal protective equipment is the chance that vaccinated individuals may still transfer the virus to people with high risk of severe illness. The country has advanced fast in vaccinations but remains far from herd immunity. As vaccines return a sense of safety to our small, indoor gathering of family and friends, face masks will still offer society an extra layer of protection against the spread of COVID-19 in a variety of social spaces.
